Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the value of phantom study and the average glandular dose on CR mammography, to assess whether those values are within the standard value recommended by ACR and to evaluate the effect of image display as hard-copy or soft-copy on phanthom study.

Materials and Methods: Among sixty mammographic machines that are used in Korea, we randomly selected 6 mammography machines, evaluated imaging quality through phantom study, and then assessed the effect on image display as hard-copy and soft-copy through phantom study. For the evaluation of average glandular dose on CR mammography, we selected 8 mammography machines randomly, and assessed the half-value layer, entrance dose and average glandular dose.

Results: Values in the evaluation of phantom study on CR mammography were 4.25 for soft-copy, 4.1 for hard-copy in fiber, 3.5, 2.8 for microcalcification and 4.17, 3.9 for mass, respectively, suggesting that the value with hard-copy is lower than those with soft-copy. In the hard-copy images, the visualization of calcification is under the standard value, which includes at least 3 microcalcification mimics. In 8 CR mammographic machines, the mean of half-value layer was 0.332¡¾0.016 mmAl, average entrance dose 787.8¡¾404.2 mR, and average glandular dose 1.3¡¾0.61 mGy.

Conclusion: The phantom criteria of hard-copy images was lower than that of soft-copy images, and the mean value of the average glandular dose was within standard value recommend by ACR. Further studies on clinical imaging analysis according to breast thickness and breast density are required.
